Engineer support for cranioplasty in children

چکیده
Craniosynostosis and skull injuries are most often causes demanding surgical cranioplasty. Craniosynostosis is a condition in which the cranial sutures close too early. Premature closure of the sutures may also cause the pressure inside of the head to increase and the skull or facial bones to change from a normal, symmetrical appearance. Cranioplasty is a surgical repair of a skull, almost as ancient as trepanation. Cranioplasty can improve neurological status in patients with skull bone defects. The mechanism of postoperative improvement in neurologic status might be increased cerebral blood flow velocity due to elimination of the effects of atmospheric pressure [1,2]. Collaboration between medical doctors and engineers contributes to latest cranioplasty methods creation. This article describes examples of neurosurgical operation supported by 3D geometrical modelling with use of modern visualization techniques and FEM analysis. The applied technology supported decision process during preoperation planning of surgical approaches

The Long-Term Neuropsychological Outcomes in Sagittal Craniosynotosis: Limited-Strip Craniectomy Vs. Whole-Vault Cranioplasty
The “functional” morbidity in nonsyndromic craniosynostosis is not obvious. Because of this disconnect between cranial deformity and “functional” disability, cranial reconstructive surgery in patients with single-suture sagittal craniosynostosis has been regarded as a “cosmetic” intervention. However, it has been observed in a preliminary study that children with simple craniosynostosis often h...
متن کاملReduction Cranioplasty for Macrocephaly
Multi-stage reduction cranioplasty was performed on two children with severe macrocephaly sec ondary to hydrocephalus. One patient underwent a four-stage operation, and the other underwent a two-stage operation. The postoperative course of both patients was uneventful. Reduction cranioplasty improved quality of life for both patients, and good cosmetic results were achieved. Reduction craniopla...
متن کاملCranioplasty in Ancient Peru: A Critical Review of the Evidence, and a Unique Case from the Cuzco Area
Cranioplasty is a well-known procedure in modern neurosurgery. Although some authors have claimed it was also performed by prehistoric trepanners in various parts of the world, there is little hard evidence to support this. Here we review various claims of cranioplasty in Peru, where trepanation was widely practised in Prehispanic times. We find little support for assertions that cranioplasty w...

Full thickness calvarial defects present considerable challenges to reconstructive surgeons. In paediatric cases, the use of biomaterials as a substrate for cranioplasty rather than autologous bone is controversial. Alloplastic cranioplasty in adults is supported by several large case series however long term outcome of biomaterial use in paediatric cases is limited. Retrospective seven year an...
متن کاملBone Resorption of Autologous Cranioplasty Following Decompressive Craniectomy in Children
Objective: In pediatric patients, autologous-bone assisted cranioplasty is preferred because the child’s original skull material will become reintegrated. Unfortunately, the replaced bone flap sometimes undergoes bone resorption, which results in structural breakdown necessitating reoperation. We report two children who underwent failure of autologous cranioplsty following decompressive craniec...
